A Gaelic traditional festival on originally celebrated on February 1st.

We celebrate Imbolc on 31.1.2026

What is Imbolc?

Although it says little about the original rites, traditions and customs, the festival of Imbolc is mentioned in several early Irish manuscripts. It is one of the four main seasonal festivals in Gaelic Ireland along with Bealtaine (1st of May), Lughnasadh (1st of August) and Samhain (31st of October/1st of November).

It is linked to arrival of lambs and sheep's milk, closely connected o the farming customes that lambs were born before calves. In late winter/early spring, sheep could survive better than cows on sparse vegetation and farmers sought to resume milking as soon as possible due to their dwindling stores. It is still winter after all! It is also connected to the blooming of blackthorn.

Although this feast is closely connected to the Celts and Ireland, it has a much broader origin and some variations and traditions were celebrated by all Indo-European tribes. Many customs revolved around the raising the energy, the vibrations and lifestream of nature. This feast is celebrated in various traditions on the 1st or 2nd of february.
