The idea to start Siren Enchantments was something that came both sudden and yet was in the making for the longest time. Looking back I see that every experience led me up to this endeavour, every blessing and also every lesson and hardship. I think throughout our lives, especially when we embrace the freedom behind all the (in)securities we think we have, we learn to navigate both storms and calm seas to get closer to who we are.
I don't think that growing into our own is always pretty. In fact, I think we often get to the point when we are at our lowest and it cannot get worse than that. I burned out before I decided to embrace Siren fully. I was going back and forth between trying to please employers who didn't give two cents about me and could replace me at a wim and diving head into the unknown, yet with taking full responsibility for myself. And what a fascinating way that was to discover more of who I am and what I'm capable of. And also realizing that faking til you make it doesn't work when it's your own path. That faking will immediately put off. When things go bad, they go bad, I can't fake them right.
When I decided in March -this year- that I had to radically change the way I communicate Siren out into the world, I felt an overwhelming fear, the inner saboteur. You're not worth the changes, you can't live up to what you offer, you can't just decide things like that, but that - I realised - was 100% former employers speaking, the boomer generation who largely lives by "I suffered,so, so should you". I decided to ignore that saboteur and a whole world opened up for me. I was met with nothing but understanding and those who feel their stories have ended with me graciously left the stage. I'm feeling incredibly grateful to have been a part of so many different people's lives so far and welcome to new faces and guests warmly. And I realised that the past doesn't hold me in its grasp and the future is yet to be written.
We don't have to abide by the laws in this world that only a select few should have it good. I don't think we as humans are capable of handling exorbitant amounts of money, power, religion and/or luxury. But we should be capable to provide people with a roof over their heads, warmth during the winter, rest during the height of summer, food on the table and the possibility to develop their hobbies. I truly remain to believe that we should equal success in happiness, fulfillment and being able to sleep comfortably.
“The world has changed.
I see it in the water.
I feel it in the Earth.
I smell it in the air.”
-Treebeard
(The Lord Of the Rings; The Fellowship Of The Ring.”
One of my favourite quotes as it is so true even today. Global temperatures are rising, where I live this calls for more unruly weather, storms and unpredictable patterns. Yet trees continue to be torn down, bushes and natural growth cut with such aggression. Life is a dance of chaos and order, life and death, yet humans are so overrepresented in destruction that by now it feels almost hopeless.
That by 2026 humans simply haven't learned to be kinder, to understand anew the connection we have with nature, how we are part of it and how we'll never be at the top of the order, always part of it. Humans continue to make things difficult and with Siren I wish to be the answer against that difficulty, the destruction, the senseless and mindless overconsumption.
I realised in the beginning of March that I was beginning to run Siren out of fear to not have work, to not have income, to be out of the system. Yet, I am not. I work every single day, but the work doesn't feel like work, it feels like purpose. It is no longer a salon, it is the Sanctuary I've always wanted it to be. I don't have services, I have offerings - of my time, my skill, my energy and experience. I don't offer retreats, they're Sojourns - meant to awaken and stir what has been stuck and shouldn't be covered with nice-nice. Siren Enchantments wasn't meant to become another business owner trying to make things work in a dying imploding system, it is a concept, a dream and a wish for providing a space that offers heart to heart connections. Yes, even with "just a haircut" and one celebration at a time.
I don't need to be understood by the whole world, I'm not reaching out for the whole world. I don't work to become filthy rich, I work to be wealthy enough to give back to the community. To have energy to dig my hands in the soil, the inspiration to make gorgeous soaps, to improve my skills as one who provides services for body, mind and spirit. This is what I'm growing into and I will gladly meet you on your own path if ours are meant to cross.
Growing into your own isn't easy, it comes with falling down and standing up. But please, oh please don't lose yourself into the visions and opinions and fears of others. Follow your heart, your own beat, your own inner fire when that call comes.
With love and ocean magic
